If we were to summarize Cannes, located on the beautiful Mediterranean coastline of southern France, we could say that it is a city steeped in history, culture and the splendor of its famous film festival.Named after the canes of its ancient reedy shoreline, Cannes was probably settled by Ligurian tribes and successively occupied by the Phoenicians, Celts (or Gauls) and Romans. In the 4th century, it came under the protection of the monks of Lérins, whose abbots were the lords. In the 10th century, fortifications were built under the Pointe du Chevalier to protect it from Muslim pirates. History buffs also know that it was in Cannes that Napoleon had his small army camped on his return from Elba. But it is Lord Brougham who really brought international recognition to Cannes. After he was prevented from entering Italy in 1834 due to quarantine measures, he decided to stop in the fishing village. He built a villa there and returned every winter for the next 34 years, taking some of the English aristocracy with him. The glamour of the city is such that the palaces of the Croisette, the historical stones of the Suquet district, the authenticity of the old fishing port, the luminous beauty of the Lerins Islands, the sunny beaches and the excitement of the big events organized at the famous Palais des Festivals et des Congrès create an incomparable atmosphere. The Croisette is the centerpiece of the city, with a promenade lined with luxury hotels and palm trees that runs along the sandy beach. The port is a stopover for yachts and transatlantic liners. Cannes has a rich cultural and natural heritage, with the Meynadier shopping street and the Forville market retaining a village atmosphere, while the Lerins Islands are a green lung full of history, inhabited by monks who make the famous Lerina liqueur.Of course, our presentation of Cannes would not be complete without mentioning its film festival. It was originally scheduled to take place in 1939, but the war interrupted the festivities. It wasn't until the Liberation that the world's most famous film festival was inaugurated in September 1946, and Cannes has been a destination for moviegoers ever since. From its long and fascinating history to its vibrant culture and natural beauty, Cannes is a destination that has something captivating about it. That little "je-ne-sais-quoi" that has made this small fishing village a must-see destination around the world.

When to go to Cannes?

You want to go to Cannes? First question: is it for the festival or not? If it is, it takes place at the end of May or beginning of June. The city is radically transformed, the atmosphere is extraordinary, and the accommodations are crowded.

Besides the festival, spring and autumn are certainly the best seasons. The prices are lower (except during the festival) than in summer, and the climate is very pleasant for walking and visiting the city without suffering too much from the scorching heat of summer.
