The old village of Villeneuve is located at 440 m altitude. The more modern agglomeration has developed on the slopes down to the Durance valley and its plain, now protected from its dreaded floods. The ruined village of La Roque is the former La Roche-Amère: it offers a panorama of the Durance valley and the Largue gorge. Do not leave Villeneuve without visiting this "Roche Amère", which you can reach on foot by taking the steep path that starts 100 metres north of the village. Visible from all sides, this huge limestone rock was detached from the Luberon mountain by the river Largue.
