Located at 1040 m above sea level, on a ridge overlooking the vacuum, the village of Turriers has approximately 400 inhabitants. It was here that Pierre Franco was born around 1501, (a local tradition wants it to be in the hamlet of Gières). He worked as an official surgeon in Switzerland in Berne and then in Lausanne. He was one of the founders of modern surgery and died around 1578. In his History of surgery, Richerand writes: " French surgery was born in the th century thanks to the work of two engineering men: Ambroise Paré and Pierre Franco». By walking in the village, don't miss the magnificent Saint-Antoine church and the dungeon ruins, also climb to the Baumelles cross, a guidance table will allow you to put a name on the surrounding summits.
