In the depths of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence lie the still preserved territories of the Hautes Terres de Provence, which include a good twenty villages perched at altitudes ranging from 600 m to more than 1,200 m. Bordered by the Durance River to the west and north, and near Sisteron to the south, the cantons of La Motte-du-Caire and Turriers are distinguished by an agricultural tradition that maintains a rural life based on cereal and fruit farming, as well as livestock. Approximately 3,200 inhabitants live year-round in small villages - sometimes hamlets - that have preserved all their traditions.
