At the beginning of the 13th century, when Barcelonnette did not yet exist, the inhabitants of the valley obtained the right from their lord to build a new town... which was to develop and surpass its rivals in importance. Faucon, which was then one of the largest towns in Ubaye, gradually became a suburb of Barcelonnette. At 3 km from Barcelonnette, going up the Ubaye, there is a superb listed tower from the 12th century and the church of Saint-Etienne with interesting furnishings, including Gallo-Roman sarcophagi. Faucon is the home of Saint Jean de Matha, who founded the Trinitarian order and whose sculpture can be found in the church.
