Castellane is a small town steeped in history. Its name comes from the Latin Petra Castellana (which can be translated as the rock with the fortified village). In the 12th century, the lords who had fought to save the town from Saracen invaders were elevated to the dignity of barons and took the name of their fiefdom, Castellane. For 2 centuries, they preserved the town's independence, until it became part of the Counts of Provence in 1262. Today, the town is peaceful. Now a sub-prefecture of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, Castellane has the distinction of being the least populated sub-prefecture in France, with around 1,600 inhabitants.
