Probable site of the Battle of Poitiers, which marked the beginning of the reconquest by the Franks of lands acquired from the Arabs.
From the heights of Vouneuil-sur-Vienne, at the top of the hill, there's a breathtaking view over the landscape where the Battle of Poitiers took place in 732. Here, the Franks led by Charles Martel repelled the onslaught of an Umayyad army led by the Emir of Spain, Abd-El-Rahman. On site, a giant chessboard with illustrated panels, a booklet and an audio guide (available from the tourist office) reveals the background to the confrontation and its protagonists.

Les historiens ne sont pas sûrs de l'emplacement, ils émettent également des doutes sur ma date. Mais une chose est sûre ce site est incontournable, l'échiquier est superbe, des plus jeunes aux plus âgés tout le monde apprend quelque chose et tout cela en accès libre. Un seul regret : les quelques dégradations dues à des imbéciles...
