This small town, located about 30 kilometers southwest of Poitiers, is famous for its state-owned forest of more than 800 hectares, made up mainly of oak trees. Walking, horseback and mountain bike trails have been set up in the forest, which is classified as a natural area of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest. It is therefore quite natural that the beautiful Romanesque church of the village, dating from the 12th century, is named Saint-Sylvain (from silva, "forest" in Latin)! The famous photographer Robert Doisneau, who liked to come and camp in the area, took several series of pictures in Saint-Sauvant.
