Located 21 km from Loudun, Saint-Jean-de-Sauves is nicknamed the agricultural capital of Loudun. The village, built around a beautiful Romanesque church, has kept its traditional houses. Also, the existence of a Gallo-Roman city has been revealed and several Merovingian sarcophagi have been unearthed (you can see one exposed in the courtyard of the town hall). The church, dating from the 11th, 12th and 19th centuries, has been listed as a historical monument since 1926. It is built in tufa and galuche. The first mention of the church dates from 1080. Also worth seeing is the museum exhibiting objects found during archaeological excavations and the chapel.
