This village of 300 inhabitants is located on a branch of the Roman road linking Vichy and Roanne. Important fairs were held in Châtel-Montagne in the 16th century. Between the 12th and 16th centuries, Châtel-Montagne was home to a priory and four monks. The various seigneurs who succeeded each other in holding an important place in local history ensured the renown of their fiefdom. It was the French Revolution of 1789 that gradually led to the decline of the village. Visit the 12th-century Romanesque church, restored in the 18th century with the help of a substantial donation from Napoleon III.
