In the 11th century, the Count of Poitou (also Duke of Aquitaine), fearing new invasions, decided to protect his borders by building a fortress. This is how the town took shape, on a rocky hillside on the left bank of the Gartempe river. Today, the town no longer has much in the way of a stronghold, but it's still a pleasant place to spend a holiday, combining nature, culture, a rich heritage (Maison-Dieu, octagon, Saint-Laurent chapel, palace...) and delicacies (including the famous macaroon)! The historic center is easy to visit from the Vieux Pont (15th-19th centuries). From here, you have an excellent view of the 11th-century Notre-Dame church. A city of the written word and the book trade, its streets are lined with booksellers and enthusiastic antiquarian booksellers of all kinds (gastronomy, humanities, English, children's books, with a bar...). Stalls of craftsmen, galleries and other creators showcase their world and share their know-how. From beautiful books to decorative items, there's something for everyone. Several museums are open to visitors: typewriter and calculator museum, art and history museum... Take advantage of the Wednesday and Saturday morning markets to discover local producers and delicacies. As for festivals, Les Rencontres de Montmorillon - Littérature & Territoires (readings, debates, concerts) are held on the1st weekend of June. And don't miss "Les Voltiges Poitevines" during "Un été autrement", the town's summer cultural program.
