This commune owes its name to the union of the two villages of La Ferrière and Airoux in 1822. "Ferrière" is said to be derived from the Latin term "ferraria" ("iron mine"), which is linked to the old iron deposits in the commune. "Airoux" has a less clear etymology: the name could come from the Poitevin word "arour" ("dry weather") or from the Old French "aride". La Ferrière-Airoux, about 20 kilometers from Civray, has a church built in the 12th century (listed as a historical monument since 1935). The village is also the starting point of the Goupils hike "between the brandes and the plains".
