Chareil-Cintrat is a small village born in 1830 from the merger of two pre-1789 parishes, which became the communes of Chareil and Cintrat. Before the French Revolution, these parishes were part of the ancient province of Auvergne. Today's village sits on a plateau overlooking the site of the late 16th-century château and the 11th-century Romanesque church of Saint-Blaise. Occupation of the site, favored by the existence of an abundant spring, has been attested since Gallo-Roman times, but was probably earlier. The conservatory of ancient grape varieties, open to the public, is located at the foot of the château.
