Human occupation of the Dissay area dates back a very long time, with burials dating from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Development took place along the Roman road linking Saintes to Tours. In the 1st half of the 13th century, Dissay became the property of the bishops of Poitiers. In 1434, one of these bishops, Hugues Combarel, obtained the right to fortify the wooden building. His successor, Pierre d'Amboise, had the castle rebuilt between 1484 and 1493. The church also dates from the 15th century. Now restored, it is home to a gourmet restaurant, charming hotel and spa.
