The peaceful town of Civray, built on the banks of the River Charente - ideal for a stroll - owes its ancient name, Sivriacum, to the man who administered the town at the time: Severus. Romanesque art from Poitevin, present here and throughout the canton, is illustrated by the superbly sculpted façade of the church of Saint-Nicolas, a must-see. On the cultural front, there's the Salle La Margelle and its always top-notch shows, the Au fil du Son festival in July, which moves the crowds, and its digital museum La Micro-folie in the Tour building on Place Leclerc, where you can see national works of art. And for your taste buds, many farms open their doors in the surrounding area.
