In Gallo-Roman times, the site was crossed by several roads, making Cérilly an important crossroads of communication. In the Middle Ages, the town grew around the church and boasted a fortified castle. In 1598, Cérilly became the seat of one of the seventeen châtellenies of the Bourbonnais region. At the time of the French Revolution, Cérilly became a district capital.
