In the very north of the département, Berrie borders on Deux-Sèvres and Maine-et-Loire. The region is clearly under the influence of Touraine and Anjou. The Dive canal crosses its territory. Vines have been grown here since the Middle Ages. Today, many estates belong to the Saumur appellation d'origine contrôlée. The château or fortress was built in the 12th century, first by the Berrye family, then by the Trémoille family in 1468, and in 1695 by the Dreux-Brézé family. The church of Notre-Dame Immaculée is well worth a visit. The Saint-Jean priory at Bas-Nueil is also worth a visit, where the first vineyard was planted in 1076.
