Founded in the 11th century, the commune has two churches: Sainte-Madeleine and Notre-Dame-d'Availles. In 1180, Raoul de Faye, uncle of Eleanor of Aquitaine, began building the Tour d'Oyré château. There are three other châteaux in the area: la Cataudière, le Bouchet and la Doubtière. Also worth a visit: the Pigeonnier du Perron, René Descartes' former tenant farm, has been converted into a luxury hotel-restaurant. In 1818, the commune was formed from the merger of the two former communes of Availles and Prinçay. Availles is home to a number of craftsmen: the Lépine oil mill (since 1810), the Berton chocolate factory..
