CASTLE OF BOURBON-L'ARCHAMBAULT
This fortress represents one of the most imposing ruins of the feudal period that there is in France.
Seat of power of the Lords and Ladies of Bourbon, the castle has its origins in a castrum of the 8th century. Of its fifteen 14th century towers, the three towers on the northern front were saved by Achille Allier. They each have three rib-vaulted rooms, as well as an underground cistern for the north-west tower, two enclosure towers, part of the curtain walls and the fortified mill. Outside the northern front, you can visit the famous Quiquengrogne de Bourbon tower, which commands the square to the south and whose name evokes the opposition of the inhabitants of the town when Louis II undertook to have it built at the end of the 14th century. If you have time, prefer the visit entitled Gélis-Didot for a walk on the whole site and ends at the panorama of the three towers overlooking the city and the countryside Bourbonnaise. The house of the canons of the 16th century can be visited at the same time as the Quiquengrogne tower. Several formulas of visits, guided or not, allow to discover the emblematic site of Bourbonnais, between friends or in family. If you have time, prefer the guided tour taking you through the entire site from the drawbridge to the panorama of the towers overlooking the city and the Bourbonnais countryside. Each season, the castle team offers themed tours, lectures, concerts, night-time entertainment ..., and Wednesday afternoons specially dedicated to children (guided tour, snack and workshop) during the school holidays.
La vue est magnifique.
Visite guidée ou libre.
