As far back as prehistoric times, Bourbon's springs, including one hot spring, attracted people to the town. Caesar took possession of the town, and from that time onwards, the benefits of the thermal waters made it a popular destination. The commune's location at the crossroads of several Roman roads enabled it to become a viguerie in the early 6th century, then a barony in 770, after Pepin the Short had subdued the region's aspirations for independence. The lordship was established in the 10th century by Aimard, succeeded by the Archambaud dynasty, and expanded through alliances and battles. Today, the town's comfortable spa facilities make it a pleasant place to live.
