Saint-Maixent-l'École, population 11,500, 25 km east of Niort. It was founded by the Oratorian monk Agapit in 459. In 480, Adjutor joined him, taking the name of Maixent. In 515, Maixent died a saint; the abbey founded on the site of his cell in the 7th century bears witness to this veneration, which the Merovingian kings maintained by dint of their wealth. Several centuries of prosperity led to the erection of a church (940) where the relics of the patriarch are (still) kept. Designated a military stronghold in the 12th century, Saint-Maixent-l'École has lost none of its vocation, which is inseparable from the EMI, founded in the 19th century and renamed the École nationale des sous-officiers d'active (Ensoa) in 1963. 2,500 young people are trained here every year.
