Saint-Hilaire-la-Palud, population 1,500, a former trading center that exploited the local clay, is now considered the capital of the wild marsh. The villages of La Rivière and Montfaucon are among the nuggets of the marsh, with their Second Empire "cabanes", the hamlets of La Nivoire and the eponymous 19th-century railway bridge, remnants of tile and brick-making activities. The commune, located on the edge of the département, retains the cachet not found in the market-garden sites of eastern France: its poplar groves, meanders and bird sanctuary, where time has truly stood still, have earned it the Station Verte label in 2023.
