It is said to have been created by Mélusine. Its eventful history begins with that of its lords and the erection of the castle (11th century). The Parthenay-l'Archevêque family, vassals of the Counts of Poitiers but allies of the Anjou-Plantagenêt bloc, made it a powerful political center until 1425, with prosperous leather and textile workshops. It was also a bustling stopover on a secondary route to Santiago de Compostela, linked to the via Turonensis (GR 36).
