Pamproux, pop. 1700 Located some 15 km from Saint-Maixent-l'Ecole, this pretty village adjoins the Bougon tumulus. Take a quick stroll through the village center, with its superb 18th-century covered market, and enjoy a meal at the eponymous bar-restaurant. A 5-minute stroll will take you to Côte-Belet and its dry, hedged lawns, an environment dotted in spring with some 20 species of wild orchid. The hillsides are planted with vines, remnants of the winegrowing activity of yesteryear, and the origin of the Fête des vendanges (early October): hike, grape harvest and pressing, musical procession, wine-tasting competition...
