Moncoutant, population approx. 3,000, is well known to fishing enthusiasts and is home to Pescalis, Europe's largest dedicated fishing resort. Moncoutant also boasts a rich history, with countless archaeological finds dating from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Boosted by a 19th-century boom in the railroad and textile industries, it boasts a fine heritage, including the Château de Saint-Claude (1870-1873, kommandantur during the Occupation). Château de Genève, which houses the municipal library, owes its name to the Calvinists who took refuge there during the Wars of Religion. Moncoutant was then known as Petite Genève.
