Melle boasts a stunning heritage, owing not only to its silver mines, exploited from the 7th to 11th centuries, but also to its position on the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela (the via Turonensis, now GR 655). An important stopover for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, the town boasts three Romanesque churches dating from the 11th and 12th centuries: the breathtaking Saint-Hilaire, on the banks of the Béronne (UNESCO), Saint-Pierre and Saint-Savinien, surrounded by ancient fortifications. These treasures are complemented by France's third-largest arboretum, created in 1979. Finally, 30 km from Niort, Melle is accessible by bike via the Vélidéale (cycle route 93).
