Mauléon overlooks the pretty Ouin valley from its rocky outcrop. Its strategic position and the wealth of its Trinité abbey made it a choice capture during the Wars of Religion (17th century) and Vendée (1793-1796). As early as 1793, it was the scene of bloody confrontations, commemorated on the hill of Château-Gaillard, including the battle of July 3, 1793: while Lescure and La Rochejaquelein failed to defeat the Bleus, Westermann ordered the destruction of the Château de la Durbellière (explore its ruins at Saint-Aubin-de-Baubigné). In the 19th century, Mauléon prospered thanks to its tanneries and shoe factories.
