Between Rome and Melle, this lively, well-to-do town is renowned for its livestock market, the3rd largest in France, and the2nd largest for calves. No fewer than 80,000 animals pass through here every year: come on Tuesday mornings from 5.15 a.m. to witness this 100% local spectacle, in conjunction with the major weekly fair organized in the town since the 12th century. Enjoy the calf's head of a lifetime at Chez Paco (in place of the renowned Restaurant du Marché) (Tuesday lunchtime). During the Heritage Days, visit the 14th-16th-century logis de Bouhas. The canton boasts a large number of Protestant cemeteries.
