La Mothe-saint-Héray owes its reputation to its superb 17th-century Orangerie and its cultural program. In summer, you can take part in a wide range of activities, from unusual guided tours of Protestant cemeteries and secret gardens to contemporary art festivals. On Thursdays and Fridays, at the market, melt for local specialties: fouace, Gargantua's famous brioche; Mothais, goat's cheese on a chestnut leaf. A former Mecca of motor sports, the little town of character is home to a parts fair (Rétro-locomotion show, Oct.) and two retro races: the Montée historique (demonstration, Oct.) and the Ronde de Chambrille (sailing, August).
