Courlay, population approx. 2,500, is part of the canton of Cerizay. It was the birthplace of French writer Ernest Pérochon (1885-1942), winner of the 1920 Goncourt Prize for his novel Nêne, and also a poet and children's author. Don't miss a visit to La Tour Nivelle, the school-museum where he was educated and later taught. Since the 19th century, Courlay has also been the stronghold of the Petite Eglise des Deux-Sèvres, a particularly discreet community of a few hundred followers. These "dissidents" practice a Catholic religion that has remained unchanged since the French Revolution, in opposition to Napoleon Bonaparte's Concordat signed in 1801, in the chapel of La Plainelière.
