The city owes its name to the Boutonne river, which rises in the city center under the washhouse of the rue de la Fontaine. Romanesque art is revealed in the church of Saint-Chartier where more than 110 relics were kept before the wars of religion. The castle of Javarzay, built in 1515, is one of the jewels of the Poitevin Renaissance. Its new scenography is dedicated to the headdresses and the femininity, as well as to the brilliant self-made man Jean-François Cail, child of the country.
