Cerizay, with a population of 4,700, dates back to Celtic times (the Sentier des Celtes traces this period). In the Middle Ages, the village nestled at the foot of its fortress, which was demolished in the 19th century to make way for Saint-Pierre church. The neo-Gothic edifice stands out for its 3 tympanums decorated with ceramics (1966). Cerizay is home to the Abbey of Notre-Dame-de-Beauchêne and the Order of Canons Regular of the Very Saint-Sauveur-du-Latran, where the President of the Republic, Canon of Honor, has a stall. Occupied by the Germans, the town was bombed on August 25, 1944: 5 citizens perished and 172 houses were destroyed, with no sign of them today.
