Celles-sur-Belles, population around 4,000, is one of the treasures of the Deux-Sèvres region. This small town of character lives to the rhythm of its 17th-century royal abbey, the work of François Le Duc. The behemoth was built on the site of a place of pilgrimage frequented by Clovis I as early as 507. The Place des Époux-Laurant, in the heart of the town, is dominated by the elegant and luminous Gothic abbey church of Notre-Dame-de-Celles. Nearby, admire the Romanesque church of Saint-Maixent de Verrines-sous-Celles (11th century, 4 km away) and the Talle à Teurtous, a venerable chestnut tree 16 metres in circumference (2.5 km away).
