Compostela pilgrims used to enter through the crenellated Saint-Jacques gate, still standing today. Brioux-sur-Boutonne, population 1,500, is located on the famous GR 655, and is still a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. In fact, you can walk along the remains of the Roman road Turonensis. However, the town owes its renown to an altogether different gathering: the Festival au Village, created in 1989 around street arts. If you're an architecture enthusiast, this event is the perfect opportunity to gain access to secret inner courtyards that you'd never guess existed on the street side. Brioux is crossed by the voie verte-Vélidéale (V93), which takes you on foot or by bike to Chef-Boutonne (15 km).
