Bressuire's history only began to take shape in the 11th century, when it became the stronghold of the Beaumont family, who dominated the barony from their fortress until the 15th century. Under their impetus, the town developed around textiles and cloth, a boom that was curbed by the Hundred Years' War, the Wars of Religion and the Vendée War. Burned by the infernal Grignon column in 1794, the town was severely depopulated, yet rose from the ashes. The arrival of the train (1886) made it a leading center for livestock breeding and slaughtering, a prosperity that has been maintained ever since, despite the decline of the railways. With a population of 20,000, Bressuire is the major center of attraction in the northern Deux-Sèvres region.
