The commune of Saint-Georges-d'Oléron is the largest on the island (it covers 4,700 hectares), but also one of the oldest. It has a rich heritage such as its church, the first one built on the island, the covered market built in 1864 as well as the town hall with its neoclassical style. The city of Oleron is also characterized by these typical villages with low houses painted with lime with outside stairs, like Chaucre, Domino or Sauzelle. Boyardville occupies a special place. The town, which owes its name to the huts in which the workers building Fort Boyard were installed - is the starting point for many sea walks and a moment of idleness on its vast beach overlooking the famous monument. Located on the edge of the coastline, the Saumonards forest is a haven of peace. Composed of maritime pines and oaks, it is a perfect setting for walking, cycling and even... horse riding! And with 16 kilometres of fine sandy beaches, Saint-Georges-d'Oléron is a paradise for bathing enthusiasts: the Bonnes beach for sportsmen, the Saumonards beach, which is willingly wild and appreciated for its calm, and the inevitable Sables-Vigniers beach, one of the most peaceful on the west coast. No doubt, between dunes, beaches and forests, the town is really an ideal place for holidays.
