Welcome to the Dionysiens, the inhabitants of the northern tip of the island. Saint-Denis d'Oléron, in addition to its market town, boasts 6 villages: Chassiron, La Gautrie, La Morelière, La Michelière, La Bétaudière and Les Huttes. While the first village was built around the church, Saint-Denis grew thanks to its port, from which ships loaded with wine and brandy sailed. At the beginning of the 20th century, roads and railways provided easier access to the north of the island. Oleron's most northerly commune has a special bond with the ocean, and is a natural choice for sea bathers.
