A former 17th-century stronghold, now an oyster-fishing port, Mornac-sur-Seudre is located on the left bank of the Seudre, in the middle of a marsh. One of France's "Hundred Most Beautiful Villages", Mornac-sur-Seudre has also been awarded the "Ville et Métiers d'Art" label. Admire its beautiful 11th-century church and narrow streets lined with hollyhocks. Remarkably well-preserved, the village retains a circular layout typical of medieval villages. You'll love strolling through the Quartier Arabe, with its small, low, tightly-packed houses served by alleyways. It is said to have been so named by sailors who had discovered the medinas on their voyages. A visit to Mornac will naturally lead you to the port. Take the time to stroll along the channel lined with brightly-colored oyster huts. Over the centuries, the Seudre marshes have been transformed by man: converted into salt pans in Roman times, they became oyster refining basins in the 18th century. The port is home to a number of restaurants that showcase local produce. Mornac is also a village that loves creative people: many artists and craftsmen exhibit their work here (painting, sculpture), contributing greatly to the town's charm and liveliness.
