"Marans, capital of the hen with extra-roux eggs": that's what the signs at the entrance to the town used to say in 1965, in tribute to the local hen who lays eggs with such a distinctive coloration, known as "extra-roux". They are, without doubt, the darkest eggs ever. But don't think the town's name comes from the golden goose! It owes its name to the ocean, Maran or Mar'ain meaning "place of the sea". In the past, the town was built on an island emerging from the Gulf of the Pictons. This former trading port welcomes yachtsmen and walkers who come to relax at the gateway to the Marais Poitevin.
