It is a village of preserved authenticity, which gives travellers the impression of arriving almost at the end of the world. Praised for its gentle way of life, the town is a haven of peace in winter and comes alive in the early days of summer. There are traces of prehistoric settlements, but the real settlement of the village dates back to the 11th century. As everywhere on Ré, one forsakes the car, preferring to discover the heart of the village on foot or by bike. It is good to stroll in the alleys full of hollyhocks, lined with pretty houses and which lead to the Place de la Liberté. It is the meeting place for locals and tourists and the beating heart of the village with its colourful market and restaurants whose terraces are ideal for enjoying this unique atmosphere. A popular holiday destination for its beaches, it is also a protected environment with the Maison du Fier dedicated to natural heritage and the Lilleau des Niges Nature Reserve located in the heart of the salt marshes. Access to the reserve is forbidden to motorized vehicles and can only be done by bike or on foot. The surroundings of the reserve, with its educational trail, offer ideal conditions for birdwatching and for birdwatching enthusiasts. 168 species of plants and 12 species of fish are also listed. A cycle track allows you to cross the whole reserve in the middle of the marshes which offer a magnificent spectacle of fauna and flora.
