It is one of the smallest communes of Oleron and a seaside resort of another time, with low houses that Pierre Loti described as being as whitewashed as the kasbahs of Algiers. For a long time, the little village lived thanks to its two main products: salt and wine. Moreover, to keep the vines producing the precious nectar, the Brénais harvested the kelp to spread it as fertilizer. The village has preserved its authenticity and its heritage like the church and especially its mill. In the past, Oleron was nicknamed "the island of 100 mills", but today only the mill in La Brée still has its mechanism
