Situated in the heart of the Antioche channel, the island of Aix lies between the island of Oléron and Fouras. But this territory has a special place in the Charente archipelago, alongside the famous island of Ré. Don't look for a bridge here, there isn't one! To discover this 3 km long crescent of land, you will have to take a boat for about 20 minutes. It is here that Napoleon entered the scene by having the fortifications rebuilt in 1808. He returned there in 1815. He disembarked on 9 July, hoping to reach America, and on 15 July he embarked on board the Bellérophon for St Helena, accompanied by a few loyal followers, including General Gourgaud.
