On the road to La Tremblade, this commune was once home to oyster farmers and cultivators. Surrounded by woods, plains, marshes and canals, Breuillet is still a dynamic locality today. It is by the road of Cailleau that we reach the oyster farming area around Coulonge. The church of Saint-Vivien de Breuillet, built in the 12th century, is a perfect example of the Romanesque art of the Saintonge region and has been classified as a historical monument. Its surroundings are still occupied by a cemetery preserving mainly 19th century burials. The church has been restored several times and was enlarged in 1767.
