Charente-Maritime and its dolmensThe department has a secular history, and its occupation by man goes back to distant ages. This shows the traces that are still found today, including numerous monuments of the Celtic era, megaliths, dolmens and other menhirs scattered here and there. It can be said that their construction dates back to the Neolithic period, around 4000 years BC, in other words, the oldest known monuments of man. Fourteen of these megaliths are classified as Historic Monuments or included in the Supplementary Inventory. Most are on private land, except those of the Valley (dolmen of the Pierre Lift - that is how the Nativity named these monuments), the Château-d'Oléron (Dolmen of Ors, dit La Piare) and Soubise (two dolmens), which belong to the State. You'll find the other 10 to… Ardillères (two dolmens, Pierre Fouquerée and Pierre Lift), Benon (Châlon field mound), Echebrune (Malabrie burrow mound), Montguyon (Folle de de), Sablonceaux (dolmen de la Pierre Levée de Berthegille), St. Lawrence-de-la-Prée (two dolmens named the Closes closed stones), Sainte-Radegonde (dolmen du Bois de la Grosse Pierre) and Saintes (polissoir placed on the ground which used to sharpen stone tools, located in the Museum of Prehistory). Finally, the dolmen de La Jarne (unclassified) was transferred to the park of the Lafaille Museum in La Rochelle. It throws!
