On the way, there are places off the main roads where pilgrims can meet to contemplate a wonderful heritage. Sauvelade is one of them. These are increasingly rare places where you can feel the strength and fullness of the path. The village, whose name means "Great Forest", was born with the creation of the abbey of Notre-Dame by Benedictine monks thanks to Gaston IV, Viscount of Bearn. This is how Sauvelade was born in the 12th century. The originality of the 13th century church comes from its Greek cross plan, with its nave as long as its transept. Inside, there is a gilded wooden statue of St. James the Greater
