The Citadel of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is the vital center of Lower Navarre. Millennia of history have shaped it, giving it the strength to remain authentic. Built in the 12th century, it became the capital of one of the five divisions of the Kingdom of Navarre. It is largely the presence of this road that has built the religious heritage of the region, architecture and Christian art blending at leisure. Romanesque art with the portal of the old church of Sainte-Eulalie - today a retirement home - as well as the church of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux, Gothic art in the church of Notre-Dame-de-Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
