Since the Middle Ages, the capital of the Angoumois province has been famous for its paper-making. This tradition endured, despite the departure of Protestant artisans after 1685. Balzac even chose an Angoumois paper-maker as the hero of his novel "Les Illusions perdues". Place New York is a reminder that the navigator Verazzano first gave the name of Nouvelle-Angoulême to what was to become the city of skyscrapers. Nicknamed the balcony of the Southwest, it is steeped in history and its houses are made of this beautiful white stone. Its comic strip festival and Pôle Magelis make it the world's image capital.
