Town hall flanked by two overhangs designed to house independent dwellings in Saint-Jean-de-Luz
In 1656, Jean de Casabielhe, the town's bayle (mayor), tired of holding communal assemblies under the church porch, planned the construction of a large communal house (Herriko Etxea). The building is flanked by two overhangs designed to house independent dwellings, but also, it is said, to block the view of the occupant of the Lohobiague house, Marie Sol de Hirigoyen, a young widow who had refused the bayle's advances. The house was used for the court entertainments organized for the wedding of Louis XIV and the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain.
