Longueval was ravaged during the Battle of the Somme, particularly during the Battle of Delville Wood (July 14 to September 3, 1916), where South African soldiers distinguished themselves. At the same time, the New Zealanders who had left Longueval managed to capture Flers. In addition to the South African memorial and its museum at Delville Wood, an obelisk was erected in memory of the Kiwi fighters at their departure point for Flers (1.5 km north of Longueval). On the wall of the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery (D20 - west of Longueval) are inscribed the names of the 1,205 men of the New Zealand Division who disappeared in the Somme in 1916.
