The history of the town of Mourenx is very special, it's quite simple, in France, it's unique! In just a few months, this town has risen from the ground... a birth not unlike that of the pioneer towns of the Far West. It was born in the heart of Béarn at the end of the 50s. A decision closely linked to the discovery of Lacq gas and the large workforce required for this new industrial activity. The workers came from all over France, but there were few solutions to accommodate them. The idea of creating a small town with nearly 3,000 dwellings emerged and the first inhabitants settled in the first building, the "A" of the street... des Pionniers. Mourenx was born on 150 hectares of land, known as the new town, sheltered from the winds and obviously close to the Lacq gas complex. In about ten years, a town of buildings surrounded by suburban districts was thus created. For rural Béarn, this dynamic city is a real revolution. Finally made up of inhabitants of various origins, it manages to create a strong identity and fits perfectly into a green setting. With the inevitable depletion of the gas basin, the town is planning its conversion and preparing its future with a vast urban renewal programme. For several years now, it has also been the "mosaic city of French and foreign cultures". It is to the overflowing imagination of an artist, Hervé di Rosa, that we owe these beautiful achievements.
